Studio Backgrounds


As mentioned, you have your choice of materials when it comes to backgrounds for studio photography – you may want to use paper, or a longer-lasting material like cloth or vinyl. Paper backgrounds come in rolls, and are designed to be used, then disposed of. They’re low-cost and provide a wrinkle-free backdrop for images.

Or, you may want to choose cloth or curtain backgrounds, which have a number of advantages of their own. They’re reusable, and can be washed to remove stains or scuffs. They’re also easier to transport than a full roll of backdrop paper – however, care is required to ensure they don’t become wrinkled. Alternatively, vinyl backdrops are handy if you plan to work outdoors, as they won’t be ruined by rain like paper or cloth backdrops. Many are also wipe-clean, making them easy to use and reuse. Remember for each type, you’ll also need a set of stands and supports.

For on-the-go shots, you may want to consider collapsible backdrops. These provide a relatively small surface area to photograph on, but are very easy to fold up and transport. Or, for small products or macro work, it’s worth looking at light tents and tables, which provide a smaller surface that you can light through for shadow-free shots.
