What’s New?
Compared to the original S1, the Panasonic Lumix S1 II Digital Camera Body makes several critical advancements. The sensor is now partially stacked, enabling a dramatic 1.6x increase in AF speed and unlocking higher frame rate video and stills modes. Video capabilities have grown from 4K 60p to 5.1K and 6K open gate, ProRes internal, and 4K 120p. Audio support now includes 32-bit float and timecode syncing via Bluetooth. These updates to the S1 II firmly position Panasonic in the direction of video optimisation in a complete package for run-and-gun photographers.
Partially Stacked Sensor and Venus Engine Processor
The Lumix S1 II is built around an upgraded 24.1MP full-frame sensor with a partially stacked design, allowing faster data readout and reduced rolling shutter. This sensor enables high-speed features such as blackout-free 70fps burst and 4K 120p recording. It offers more than 15 stops of dynamic range thanks to Dual Native ISO, with sensitivity ranges of 640 - 51200 and 1000 - 256000 when enabled. For detailed work, High-Resolution Mode captures 96MP stills by combining multiple exposures using in-body stabilisation. Paired with Panasonic’s high-speed Venus Engine, LUMIX colour science, and dynamic range boost, the S1 II delivers clean images, smooth tonal transitions, and accurate colour across both stills and video.
1.6x Faster Autofocus and AI Performance
The S1 II introduces phase detection autofocus with 779 selectable points and real-time AI subject recognition for humans, animals, and fast-action movement. The Urban Sports AF preset improves tracking during unpredictable motion, making it ideal for content creators covering street life such as skateboarding, dance, or live events. The S1 II’s partially stacked sensor structure allows up to 1.6x faster focusing than the original S1, while electronic shutter burst modes reach up to 70fps with no blackout. Phase Detection AF remains effective in very low light down to -6 EV, helping ensure precise subject tracking even in challenging conditions.
Video Optimisation Features
For filmmakers, the S1 II records full-sensor 5.1K open gate video at up to 60p, plus 6K open gate at 30p - ideal for reframing the shot or creating vertical edits. It supports internal 5.8K ProRes recording via CFexpress and direct USB-SSD capture for efficient high-bitrate recording. 4K 120p 10-bit is available with a 1.24x crop, and users can capture 5.9K 10-bit without any crop. With real-time LUTs, V-Log, and full 10-bit workflows, the S1 II offers cinema-ready colour control on set and in post-production. The camera also features 5-axis in-body image stabilisation offering up to 8 stops of compensation, with Dual I.S. 2 support when paired with Panasonic L-Mount lenses. This stabilisation system greatly enhances handheld performance for both low-light photography and dynamic video capture.
Advanced Audio and Timecode Support
The Panasonic Lumix S1 II has shifted towards prioritising optimised audio features, forging a strong partnership between video and audio. When used with the DMW-XLR2 adapter (sold separately), the S1 II records in 32-bit float format for uncompromised audio range and precision. Four-channel audio capture and linear PCM recording formats make it suitable for interviews, music, and broadcast environments. Additionally, Bluetooth timecode syncing with UltraSync BLUE also allows multicam setups to remain synchronised without bulky wired connections.
Ergonomics, Build and Storage
The camera body of the S1 II maintains Panasonic’s rugged magnesium alloy chassis, with weather sealing and a weight of just 800g with battery and SD card. The 3-inch LCD offers tilt and vari-angle movement, while the 5.76 M-dot OLED EVF ensures precise framing. Dual card slots support CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II, with the option to back up files or record directly to an external SSD.

FAQs:
What are the storage and backup options of the Panasonic Lumix S1 II Digital Camera?
The Lumix S1 II includes dual card slots for CFexpress Type B and SD UHS-II. It also supports direct USB-SSD recording, allowing users to capture footage straight to an external drive. This feature is ideal for high-bitrate formats like ProRes and provides instant backup options during extended recording sessions.
What is the battery life of the Panasonic Lumix S1 II?
The Lumix S1 II uses the Panasonic DMW-BLK22E rechargeable battery, which provides approximately 350 - 390 shots per charge, depending on usage and display mode. For extended sessions, the S1 II supports USB Power Delivery and can be powered or charged via its USB-C port. The optional DMW-BG2 battery grip also allows a second battery to be in use, doubling the runtime for extended shoots.
Does the Lumix S1 II support hybrid zoom or crop modes?
The Lumix S1 II includes in-camera crop zoom options that let you punch in digitally while preserving high image quality, especially useful when recording in resolutions like 5.9K or 6K and outputting in 4K. For example, when shooting 5.9K 3:2 open gate, you can extract 16:9, 1:1, or vertical formats without quality loss. This feature allows hybrid creators to reframe for social, cinematic, or stills on the same shoot without changing lenses or reshooting.
What connectivity options does the Lumix S1 II have?
The Lumix S1 II features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with 10 Gbps transfer speeds, Power Delivery, and UVC support for livestreaming or webcam use. It includes a full-size HDMI Type A port for external monitoring or output. Additional ports include 3.5mm jacks for headphones and microphones, a 2.5mm remote input, and support for the optional Panasonic DMW-XLR2E Microphone Adapter for 4-channel XLR audio input, making it well-equipped for production setups.
Can the Lumix S1 II be used with external recorders or monitors?
The Lumix S1 II is compatible with a wide range of professional external HDMI devices, including Blackmagic’s Video Assist 5" and 7" 12G HDR models, as well as multiple ATOMOS units like the Ninja V, Ninja V+, Ninja, Ninja Ultra, Shogun, Shogun Ultra, and Shogun Connect. These allow you to record in formats like Apple ProRes or ProRes RAW, monitor in HDR, and access advanced exposure tools.
Can the Lumix S1 II be used for livestreaming?
The Lumix S1 II supports UVC/UAC, allowing it to function as a high-quality webcam over USB-C without requiring additional software. It also supports wireless livestreaming via Wi-Fi and can record proxies during stream capture. This feature makes it suitable for both professional livestreaming and remote broadcasting.
Does the Lumix S1 II support log recording and colour grading?
The Lumix S1 II includes V-Log recording as standard, giving you a flat colour profile with wide dynamic range, ideal for post-production grading. Support for ARRI LogC3 will also be available in a future upgrade via the optional DMW-SFU3A key, letting you match footage with ARRI cameras.
